Online Trauma Counselling Across Australia
You don't have to keep carrying this alone, and you don't have to live near a specialist to get the right support.
At True Self Space, we offer online trauma counselling to clients anywhere in Australia via secure telehealth. Whether you're in a capital city, a regional town, or somewhere the right kind of trauma therapist simply isn't available locally, you can access gentle, trauma-informed care from the comfort of your own space.
Trauma-Informed Online Counselling, Wherever You Are in Australia
Trauma-informed online counselling isn't a lesser version of in-person therapy - for many people, it's a better fit. Being in your own home, on your own sofa, with your own supports nearby can help your nervous system feel safe enough to do the work.
Specialist trauma therapists trained in approaches like Internal Family Systems can be hard to find outside the major cities. Telehealth removes that barrier. Many of our interstate clients came to us precisely because they couldn't find trauma-informed, IFS-trained support in their own area. From Brisbane and Sydney to Perth, Adelaide, and regional Australia, distance no longer decides who you can work with.
How Online Trauma Therapy Works
Online trauma therapy at True Self Space uses secure, encrypted video conferencing. Sessions run for 50 minutes, the same as in-person appointments, and follow the same carefully-paced process.
Before your first session, you'll receive a link to join our secure video platform. All you need is a private space where you won't be interrupted, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.
We'll spend the early sessions building safety and getting to know each other before we go anywhere near difficult material - there's never any pressure to share more than feels right.

Is Online Trauma Therapy Effective?
Yes. Research consistently shows that trauma therapy online is as effective as face-to-face work for most people. What makes trauma therapy heal isn't the physical room - it's the relationship, the pacing, and the safety you feel in the process, all of which translate fully to telehealth.
For trauma work in particular, being in your own environment can be an advantage. Regulating your nervous system is easier when you're somewhere familiar and safe, and many clients find they can stay present and grounded more easily at home than in an unfamiliar clinic.
Our Approach to Trauma Therapy Online
Trauma healing requires more than talking about what happened. Our online trauma counselling uses approaches designed specifically for trauma recovery:
Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps us work with the parts of you affected by trauma - the parts carrying pain, the parts protecting you from feeling it, and the parts frozen in the past. IFS allows trauma to be processed gently, without overwhelming your system.
Attachment-based therapy addresses how trauma - especially early or relational trauma - shapes your ability to feel safe in relationships, including the relationship with yourself.
Trauma-informed pacing means we never push you to revisit painful memories before you're ready. You stay in control of the process. Healing happens when the nervous system feels safe, not when it's flooded.
The Trauma We Help With
Online trauma counselling at True Self Space supports adults working through:
-
Childhood trauma, emotional neglect, and unstable or unsafe caregiving
-
Complex and developmental trauma from ongoing difficult environments
-
Relational trauma, including emotionally abusive or controlling relationships
-
Single-event trauma such as accidents, assault, or sudden loss
-
Complex PTSD and the lasting imprint trauma leaves on the body and mind
-
Emotional avoidance, numbness, and feeling disconnected from yourself
-
Difficulty trusting others or expressing your needs in relationships
-
A sense that you can't show up as your authentic self
You don't need a formal PTSD diagnosis to seek support. If past experiences are affecting your present life, that's reason enough.
Trauma Support for Interstate and Regional Australians
If you live outside a major city, your local options for specialised trauma therapy can be limited - sometimes to a single provider, sometimes to none at all. Online trauma counselling gives you a genuine choice of therapist based on fit and training, not just proximity.
We work with clients across every state and territory, with flexible scheduling that accounts for different time zones. Wherever you are in Australia, the same compassionate, depth-oriented trauma therapy we offer in person is fully available to you online.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do trauma therapy online?
Yes. Trauma therapy online is well-established and, for many people, as effective as in-person work. At True Self Space we deliver trauma-informed counselling Australia-wide via secure video, using the same IFS and attachment-based approaches we use in the room.
Is online trauma counselling as effective as in person?
For most people, yes. The relationship, the pacing, and the sense of safety are what drive trauma recovery, and all of these work fully over telehealth. Being in your own safe space can even make it easier to stay grounded during trauma work.
Do I need a referral for online trauma counselling?
No referral is required. You can book directly with us. We operate as a privately billing practice, so you don't need a GP mental health plan to begin.
What happens if I become distressed during an online session?
We work at a pace that's designed to prevent overwhelm, building safety and grounding skills before processing any difficult material. If strong feelings do come up, we slow down and use those skills together - you stay in control of the process the whole way through.
